Cytokine levels in the hippocampus of controls and infected mice following artesunate treatment. C57BL/6 mice were intraperitoneally infected with 10⁶ parasitized erythrocytes and control (non-infected) animals received the same volume of PBS (n = 5 per group). On day 4 post-infection P .berghei-infected mice received a single dose of artesunate (ip 32 mg/kg). The hippocampus was collected on day 5 post-infection, homogenized and IL-1β expression was measured by ELISA while IFN-γ, TNF, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-17 levels were assessed by cytometric bead array (CBA). Results are expressed as mean ± SEM. Asterisk(s) indicate statistical differences where *p < 0.05.
